Architectural Design - HJGA Consulting, Architecture & Historic Preservation is committed to the philosophy that architecture can have a positive effect on society. We believe that architecture must provide a pleasant, habitable environment for all occupants. Buildings and structures are civil works that are part of the larger whole and not personal statements, and therefore should be well connected to their adjacent physical fabric.

Ridgewood Avenue Railroad Station, Glen Ridge, Courtesy: Glen Ridge Public Library     Historic Preservation - The presence of older buildings enhances and graces the built environment by providing a connection to local heritage and fostering stronger communities. We concentrate on this aspect of our practice by providing a full range of architectural and historic preservation services. The firm has been involved in numerous preservation studies guiding a variety of interventions including the planning for the stabilization, rehabilitation, restoration and reconstruction of historic resources. These studies have specified sensitive conservation treatments for a broad range of building types that are geared specifically to the building's materials and properties.

Rehabilitation - The built environment holds an embodied energy within existing structures that is readily available for creative recycling opportunities. Our urban setting presents numerous challenges for the re-use of our abundant building stock. Extending the useful life of existing buildings through a thoughtful rehabilitation is an area of specialty. The members of the firm also have extensive experience in adapting the built environment for the physically challenged.

As such, a component of the firm's specialization is in the preparation of nominations to the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. As a component of planning for historic preservation projects, HJGA Consulting works with our clients to determine the appropriate use and interpretation of historic properties and to help sites address the needs of heritage tourists, educators and students.
